Miranda Wright

Miranda Wright

Miranda Wright is a fictional character on the tv show "Bonkers", voiced by Karla DeVito. Wright is frequently characterized as a serious, kind-hearted policewoman, but little exploration of her character was done in the 19 episodes she appeared in. She has attained the rank of Sergeant in the LAPD, and is partnered with "toon" cop Bonkers D. Bobcat on the show. She seemingly has infinitely more patience with the wacky toon than her predecessor on the series, detective Lucky Piquel, and allows him more latitude in solving cases (even though her supervisor, Sgt. Francis Grating, is far more demanding than Piquel's, the bumbling Chief Leonard Kanifky).

According to Bonkers, she's quite intelligent, though in some episodes she seems to be little more than a glorified meter-maid, longing to do "real police work". While quite attractive in her own right, she is never portrayed as a sex symbol in the same fashion as Jessica Rabbit in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", though that film doubtlessly served as inspiration for the "Bonkers" series. She has an older sister, Shirley, who is supposedly a famous investigative reporter; Miranda has something of an inferiority complex toward her more glamorous and worldly sibling, though the two try to hammer out their differences in one episode. She is apparently not married (on several occasions she has been seen to be living alone), but has a dog; she frequently babysits her nephew Timmy.

Though Wright is supposed to have replaced Piquel when the latter was promoted to the FBI, and the episodes featuring her occur after the Piquel episodes in the series’ official chronology, the so-called "Miranda Episodes" were actually made before the Piquel shows. Because of a political struggle at Disney, all but 19 of the Miranda episodes were destroyed by the studio, and new episodes were produced that featured Piquel as Bonkers’ partner. A crossover episode, entitled "New Partners On The Block", was made to tie the two seemingly disparate scenarios together; it was the only episode made by the Piquel team that Miranda appeared in (although a Miranda-lookalike character was briefly seen as Chief Kanifky's secretary in a Piquel episode).

Her name is very obviously a play on Miranda rights, the Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights which the Supreme Court decided in 1966's "Miranda v. Arizona" must be read to anyone the police question about a crime.

Miranda's relationship with Bonkers inspired Elisa Maza's relationship with Goliath in "Disney's Gargoyles". Elisa would later fall for Goliath, Miranda's own feelings for Bonkers remain undisclosed.
