Chelford railway station serves the village of Chelford in Cheshire, England. The station is 23 km (14¼ miles) north of Crewe on the Manchester-Crewe Line.

1894 rail crash

On 22 December 1894 a strong wind blew a high-sided freight wagon into violent contact with other wagons, causing one to overturn and block the main line. An express train between London and Manchester collided with the wagon. 14 people were killed, and 48 injured.

Services

Following the timetable changes in December 2008 there exists an hourly service southbound to Crewe and northbound to Manchester Piccadilly via Stockport. Services to Manchester via Manchester Airport run 'semi-fast' and skip the station, with the exception of the 08.50 Chelford to Manchester service. Services are operated by Northern Rail.

Since the timetable change, peak time services have seen a marked reduction in frequency. The 08.19 service to Manchester Piccadilly no longer calls at Chelford, instead being retimed to depart from Crewe at 07.55 rather than 08,00 and then it runs 'semi-fast', skipping Goostrey and Chelford and calling at Alderley Edge at 08.15. Thus morning commuters face a choice of the 07.51 to Manchester Oxford Road, arriving into Piccadilly at 08.27, or the 09.09, arriving into Piccadilly at 09.44. Evening peak services are also reduced with the additional peak 15.33 and 17.33 departures from Manchester Piccadilly being slightly retimed and no longer calling at Chelford or Goostrey.

The December 2008 timetable also saw the introduction of a regular 2-hourly Sunday service to Manchester Piccadilly and Crewe.
