Coronado High School is the second newest high school in the Lubbock Independent School District. Coronado, named for the great Spanish adventurer and explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, opened its doors in 1965 as the fourth high school in Lubbock, joining the list of Lubbock High, Monterrey High and Dunbar High. Estacado was built several years after Coronado opened. The mascot of the school is the Mustang and the school colors are Scarlet and Old Gold. Like the other high schools in LISD, Coronado operates on a block schedule alternating between Red and Gold days. The school serves the southwestern part of Lubbock, Texas. The Coronado male sports teams are known as the "Mustangs" with the female teams referred to as the "Lady Mustangs".

Unknown to most students and parents of Lubbock county and Lubbock Independent School District, Coronado boasts excellent SAT/ACT scores, a high number of passing grades on AP exams, a superb Academic Decathlon team, and higher grades on state mandated testing than all other schools in LISD. Along with Academics Coronado also excels in Athletics with a #4 in the State tennis team, a district leading football team, a highly ranked boys basketball team, and multiple other sports programs that lead the district and LISD.[citation needed]
