Niederried bei Kallnach is a municipality in the Seeland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

To the southeast of the municipality lies the Niederried reservoir. It is a refuge of international importance for water and wading birds.

Schools

Niederried has its own school for the first through fourth grades. The upper grades of primary and all of middle school are in Kallnach, and for high school the children must be sent to Aarberg.

Geography

Niederried bei Kallnach has an area, as of 2009^[update], of 4.52 square kilometers (1.75 sq mi). Of this area, 2.42 km² (0.93 sq mi) or 53.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.66 km² (0.64 sq mi) or 36.7% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.24 km² (0.093 sq mi) or 5.3% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.22 km² (0.085 sq mi) or 4.9% is either rivers or lakes and 0.01 km² (2.5 acres) or 0.2% is unproductive land.^[3]

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.1% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.5%. Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 44.0% is used for growing crops and 9.1% is pastures. Of the water in the municipality, 1.8% is in lakes and 3.1% is in rivers and streams.^[3]

Demographics

Niederried bei Kallnach has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 296.^[1] As of 2007^[update], 4.2% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 2.1%. Most of the population (as of 2000^[update]) speaks German (94.9%), with Portuguese being second most common (1.8%) and Serbo-Croatian being third (1.5%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was SVP which received 50.5% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (26.5%), the Green Party (8.9%) and the FDP (4.9%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000^[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 21.3% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 65.8% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 12.9%. In Niederried bei Kallnach about 74.2% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Niederried bei Kallnach has an unemployment rate of 0.1%. As of 2005^[update], there were 21 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 10 businesses involved in this agricultural sector. 11 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 5 businesses in this manufacturing sector. 5 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 2 businesses in the services sector.^[4]
