Phyllis Shand Allfrey

Phyllis Shand Allfrey (1908 – 1986), a notable name in West Indian literature, was born on the island of Dominica in the Caribbean. She is most famous for her only novel, 1953's "The Orchid House", which was made in 1991 as a Channel 4 miniseries in the United Kingdom.

In politics, she founded the Dominica Labour Party, and was also the only (woman) minister of the West Indies Federation.

She also ran and wrote for a newspaper, " [http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/ufdc/?b=UF00072476 The Dominica Star] ", which lasted from 1965 until 1982.

She died in her native land in 1986. A posthumous collection of her short stories, "It Falls Into Place" (ISBN 0-9532224-1-1), was published by Papillote Press in 2004.
