William Morris (bishop)

Bishop William Placid Morris, O.S.B. (29 September 179418 February 1872) was a London-born Roman Catholic bishop.

Morris was ordained a priest of the Order of Saint Benedict in 1818.

From 1831 to 1840, he was Vicar Apostolic of Cape of Good Hope, Western District, South Africa. He was also Titular Bishop of Alexandria Troas (appointed 1831/ordained 1832).

Morris, whose rule extended over Australian missions, sent his vicar-general William Bernard Ullathorne to New South Wales, Australia in 1833, where Ullathorne persuaded Pope Gregory XVI to establish the hierarchy in Australia.

His Principal Consecrator was Bishop James Yorke Bramston and his Principal Co-Consecrators were Bishop Peter Augustine Baines, O.S.B. and Bishop Robert Gradwell.
