The National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) is the trade association representing American music publishers and their songwriting partners. The NMPA’s mandate is to protect and advance the interests of music publishers and songwriters in matters relating to the domestic and global protection of music copyrights.[1] More than 800 music publishers are members of NMPA and their subsidiaries and affiliates own or administer at least sixty percent of the musical compositions registered for copyright in the United States. The NMPA plays a central role in safeguarding the copyright interests of music publishers in the courts and before Congress.[2]

The NMPA was founded in 1917. The NMPA was a leading voice for music publishers in the enactment of the Copyright Act of 1976.

In September 2001, the NMPA reached a settlement with Napster, turning the company into a fee-based service with publishers licensing music to the users.[3]

Along with the Music Publishers' Association (MPA), the NMPA has been responsible for taking many free guitar tablature web sites offline.

NMPA is a member of IIPA, a business alliance which amongst others publishes the Special 301, a controversial list of countries that a coalition of copyright holders feel does not do enough to combat copyright infringements.
