* March 1 - Writs are issued in February by Charles I of England that every county in England (not just seaport towns) pay ship tax by this date.

* August 10 - The Swedish 64 gun sailing ship "Vasa" sinks on her maiden voyage in the Stockholm harbor.
* August 23 - George Villiers, the first Duke of Buckingham, is assassinated by John Felton.
* September 6 - Puritans settle Salem, which will later become part of Massachusetts Bay Colony.
* October 28 - The Siege of La Rochelle ends with the surrender of the Huguenots.

1628 in Fiction

The classic novel "The Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas, père takes place in 1628. The story includes fictionalized versions of actual historical events of this year, such as the siege of La Rochelle and the assassination of the Duke of Buckingham (see above).

"The Angel's Command", a children's adventure novel by British writer Brian Jacques, also takes place in this year.

Film adaptations of "The Three Musketeers" that are faithful to the novel (e.g. the 1974 version) also are faithful to the historical events of the year. However, some movie versions leave the realm of history and enter the realm of fantasy.
