Durganagar (Bengali: দুর্গানগর) is a suburb of Kolkata, though administratively under the district of North 24 Parganas. The town is about 16 km. from Sealdah station towards Bongaon and 1 km. west to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. It was named after goddess Durga.

Geography

Durganagar (WEST) is a part of North Dum Dum Municipality since 2000, while Durganagar (EAST) belongs to DUM DUM MUNICIPALITY. Previously it was under Sultanpur. Its population is about 50,000. Most of the people are Hindu. Only about 2-3 hundreds of Muslim population are residing to its eastern side. Main landmark of this town is Durganagar Rly. Station, which is on the Sealdah - North(SEALDAH - BONGAON) section of the Kolkata suburban railway system. The place is very close to the Kolkata Airport also.

History

The place is named after the goddess Durga. Almost 3-4 Durga puja's pandels are set up during the main festive season. The main Puja is the "Durganagar Sarbajanin puja", which is set up at the main (durganagar sporting club) playground near Durganagar X Roads (Chou rasta) near 'Ananda Sandhya' banquet hall.

Durganagar Nabarun Sangha situated at Dum Dum North Assembly, Ward No. 21 under North Dum Dum Municipality, established in the year 1972 Reg. No. S/44409 and it’s extended medical unit as ‘Nabarun Sebalaya’ in 1993 which was inaugurated by Hon’ble Health Minister, Dr. Prasanta Sur. Govt. of West Bengal. Since then we have been providing free treatment along with medicines to the poor patients under the guidance and with the help of few famous Doctor’s of our locality and the Club members.

Even Kali Puja is celebrated in a GRAND fashion there....Aloke Sangha Club is well known for this, live Devi Kali is the main attraction here.Durganagar sporting Club organizes this event in their own prestigious way.

But the main celebration is on the 31 December, when Big open air stage is made where renowned singers from Bengal and performs. The entire shows ends with a massive display of fireworks at midnight welcoming the new year in a grand style.

Location

Almost all important places are near the train station.

This place very near to several good schools like St.Stephen's School, Kishore Bharati, Auxillium Convent, KK Hindu Academy, Christchurch, Aditya Academy, Motijheel Girls and Baidyanath High school.

It has its own post office, Allahabad Bank, AXIS bank ATM, HDFC ATM and UBI Bank a market and several playgrounds. Almost the whole population is constituted by 4-5 member small families with a single earning member. Many of them are servicemen (state/central govt. jobs), people working in IT industries and Doctors and Engineers. Residents commute daily to Kolkata through local train or by autoride to Airport which is a huge junction. Even the Kolkata METRO is a good option for people to commute to Central Calcutta.

Environment

Its just 1 km from the NSCB International Airport and falls within the Dum Dum locality, but still one can find plenty of greeneries around with lots of coconut trees around. In the morning the sweet sound of chirping of birds reminds of a nostalgic old Kolkata. This place is almost pollution free with lots of green all around. Facities are adequate enough with almost everything nearby.But this environment was seen some TEN years ago, now many flats and buildings are constructed by destroying many playground and ponds.The number of Vehicles and people have increased in a HUGE form.Many trees have been cut down for the CONSTRUCTION.But there is no bus route from durganagar station.

People

There are couple of well-known personalities in Durganagar. Late Dr. Nirmal Kumar Roy Chowdhury, who founded Swarnamayi Smiriti Vidyalaya, was one of them. Dr. Roy Chowdhury had treated the local patients for free. His nephew, Sandip Chowdhury, is the most prominent personality in Durganagar. After a very successful stint in Corporate India, he has joined Stanford Graduate School of Business as a Sloan Fellow.
