Terence Etherton

Sir Terence Michael Elkan Barnet Etherton (born 1951), styled The Hon. Mr Justice Etherton, is a British High Court judge.

Etherton was educated at St Paul's School and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.

He was in the British Sabre team from 1977 to 1980 and qualified for the Moscow Olympics.

He was called to the Bar by Gray's Inn in 1974 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1990. Etherton was appointed as a High Court Judge in 2001 and assigned to the Chancery Division.

He was the first High Court Judge to announce in The Times (8 February 2006) his entry into a civil partnership under the Civil Partnership Act.

In August 2006 Etherton was appointed Chairman of the Law Commission, the statutory independent body created by the Law Commissions Act 1965 to keep the law under review and to recommend reform where needed.

In 2005, Etherton was installed as an honorary fellow of Royal Holloway College, University of London and in 2007 he was made an honorary fellow of his former college, Corpus Christi, Cambridge.

In 2008 following the expansion of the Court of Appeal from 37 to 38 judges it was announced that Terence Etherton was to take the post of Lord Justice of Appeal. He was sworn into this office on 29 September 2008.
