John Hampden Grammar School (known colloquially as "JHGS") is a boys' grammar school in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England. It is named after politician and English Civil War participant John Hampden. It should not be confused with the similarly named John Hampden School, which is a primary school in Wendover, Buckinghamshire.

The school was originally the Wycombe Technical High School (WTHS), which was founded in the building to the east of the town centre vacated by the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe, when the latter moved to its present site to the north of the town. In 1966 when the WTHS moved to a new site to the south of the town, it was renamed as The John Hampden School (TJHS), and later took on the Grammar school name (JHGS).

As the original name suggested, the school was practically orientated, but now its results put it alongside other Buckinghamshire grammar schools [http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/main.jhtml;jsessionid=5RJX4P1OWTUOPQFIQMGCFF4AVCBQUIV0?xml=/education/leaguetables/alevels2007.xml] . New buildings, opened recently, include a new sports hall and mathematics classrooms. In 2008 the school was rated as outstanding by OFSTED. In 2001 the school was awarded specialist school status as a Technology College, by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). It was also recently awarded Sports College status. [cite web

The school is one of the few grammar schools that doesn't teach Latin, rather they teach German, Spanish and French. Modern Languages at the school are taught in a custom built state-of-the-art Language Lab (providing students with IT learning facilities and interactive teaching).

The school has also conducted many football, hockey and rugby tours, the website for the most recent being http://www.jhgstour.com.

Miscellaneous

In 2003 the Royal Grammar School was used as the location for two seasons of the television series That'll Teach 'em for Channel 4. The then head teacher was the retired head of the John Hampden Grammar School, Andrew MacTavish. Mr. MacTavish was himself a pupil at the RGS, and started his teaching career there. [cite web

Sporting Achievements

In 2008, the Year 9, under 14 football team won the ESFA Under 14 Schools' Cup for the first time in over 25 years, beating Lancaster School from Leicester at Huish Park, the home of Coca Cola League 1 side Yeovil Town F.C.. After travelling to Edinburgh, the school came 4th place in the SAFIB Under 14 ‘Battle of Britain’ Festival of Football on the weekend of 30th May - 1st June 2008.

The school recently became one of the few schools in the UK to have a climbing wall added as part of the sporting facilities. It also has the privilege of using the facilities of the Wycombe Sports Centre nearby.
