The yawning, "Poromitra oscitans", is a fish of the family Melamphaidae, found in tropical and subtropical waters of the indo-Pacific region, at depths of from 800 to 5000 m. The adult fish length is typically from 7 to 10 cm.

The yawning is a small deep-water bathypelagic species, similar to Melamphaes microps but with a higher back, which gives it a more substantial look, and much smaller eyes and larger mouth.

The colour is dark brown or black.
