Turn Village

Turn Village is located on the A680 near Edenfield. Turn is a typical upland Lancashire village in picturesque location in the heart of the Pennines. The village was first established in the mid 19th century for the Lodge Mill and quarry workers of the surrounding area. Then village was developed along four lanes; Rochdale Road, Bleakholt Road, Lodge Mill Lane and Ridinghead Lane. In 2003, the closure of the mill and quarries put the local pub out of business, and later the mill was demolished and a new housing development was created. This brought an extra 29 families to the village, bringing the total population to 46 families. When the public house was built it was named the Plane Tree Hotel. Each year the Holcombe hunt gathered prior to setting off on the annual fox and hound chase. From 1966 the Lawson family, Donald, Evelyn and their three children Peter Robert, Patricia Anne and Jon Paul lived in the licenced premises and made the public house a thriving business and often staged events to raise monies for charity. Burt Royal and Vic Faulkner, the two famous wrestling brothers of the era visited to `push a pile of pennies over` for a hugely successful charity event.
