Their second son was Stanley Colville (1861-1939), who rose to prominence as a Navy officer. A grandson via another son was Jock Colville (1915 - 1987), civil servant and memoirist.

Charles John Colville served as a Captain in the 11th Hussars and was President of the Honourable Artillery Company. He was a representative peer for Scotland from 1851-1885, and served in government as Chief Equerry and Clerk Marshal to Her Majesty the Queen in 1852 and from 1858-1859 and as Master of the Buckhounds from 1866-1868.
