Laura McLaren, Baroness Aberconway

Laura McLaren, Baroness Aberconway

Laura McLaren, Baroness Aberconway CBE (born Laura Elizabeth Pochin) (d. January 4, 1933, Antibes) was a British suffragist and noblewoman. She was the daughter of Henry Davis Pochin, a noted industrialist and chemist.

On March 6, 1877, she married Charles McLaren, a business associate of her father's, in Westminster. He would later be created Baron Aberconway, and they would be the parents of four children.

She was a campaigner for women's suffrage, founding the Liberal Women's Suffrage Union and publishing some writings on the subject. During World War I, she converted her house in London into a hospital and helped to run it. She was awarded the CBE in 1918.

Aside from her political activities, she was a talented artist and gardner. She and her husband worked to expand and improve the Bodnant Garden begun by her father, and were friends of James McNeill Whistler.
