Tiga Island

Coordinates: 21°6′25″S 167°48′53″E / 21.10694°S 167.81472°E / -21.10694; 167.81472 Tiga Island, also called Tokanod, is a small, island in the South Pacific Ocean. Tiga lies 35 km (22 mi) from Lifou Island, and 24.5 km (15.2 mi) from Maré Island in the Loyalty Islands. The Loyalty Islands are part of the greater archipelago of New Caledonia.

Tiga is part of the commune (municipality) of Lifou, in the province des îles Loyauté or Loyalty Islands Province, one of three provinces of the Territory of New Caledonia and Dependencies, an overseas territory of France. The island is 6 km (3.7 mi) long and 2 km (1.2 mi) wide, totaling about 10 km (4 sq. miles). The highest point is 76 m (249 ft) above sea-level. The population of Tiga Island was 169 in 1996, for a density of about 17 person per km.

Tiga is featured in the children's novel On the Run (1964), by British author Nina Bawden. The novel was recognized as a superior work of children's fiction from the past twenty years by receiving a XXX award in 1993.

One summer, a boy named Ben is living in London with his father, stepmother-to-be, and cousins. His cousin is not well. Ben is on his own a lot, so he explores the gardens of the terrace houses on his street by walking along the walls connecting them until he comes a house covered in jagged glass. He falls into a garden behind the house with jagged glass and meets Thomas, a boy from Tiga Island. Thomas stays in London while his father, Chief Okapi, is in exile there. Ben discovers a plot to kidnap Thomas, and decides to run away with him, and his friend Lil.
