Candidates of the 2006 South Australian Legislative Elections.

Retiring MPs

* Liberal MP Mark Brindal lost preselection in his seat of Unley to businessman David Pisoni, who narrowly managed to hold the seat. Brindal was initially preselected to instead contest Labor-held Adelaide, but withdrew after a sex scandal.

* Liberal MP Dorothy Kotz retired in her seat of Newland. Police prosecutor Mark Osterstock was preselected as her replacement, but lost the election to Labor candidate Tom Kenyon.

* Liberal MP Wayne Matthew retired in his seat of Bright. Liberal MLC Angus Redford resigned from the Legislative Council to contest the seat, but was defeated by Labor candidate Chloe Fox.

* Liberal MP and former Premier Dean Brown retired in the safe seat of Finniss. He was succeeded by local mayor Michael Pengilly.

* Liberal MP John Meier retired in the safe seat of Goyder. He was succeeded by Liberal candidate and Yorke Peninsula Council CEO Steven Griffiths.

* Liberal MLC Julian Stefani retired at the election. He was replaced on the Liberal ticket by farmer Tim Keynes, but due to an unexpectedly low Liberal vote, Keynes failed to take Stefani's seat.

* Labor MLC and outgoing President of the Legislative Council Ron Roberts did not contest the election after losing preselection to unionist Russell Wortley, husband of Senator Dana Wortley, who was duly elected in his place.

* Democrat MLC Ian Gilfillan retired at the election. Incumbent MLC Kate Reynolds took his top position on the Democrat ticket, with farmer Richard Way taking the second position. The Democrat vote had slipped badly since the last election, however, and the party lost both seats.
