Marcel Bear

Marcel Bear

Marcel Bear is an engineer and musician from New Zealand. In 1993 he formed Empirical, a project devoted to the shimsaw, an instrument of his own invention. Empirical was often a solo project, but it occasionally expanded to multiple players, under the name Empirical Orchestra. For Empirical's debut LP, "La Gloria", Bear was joined by David Coventry (side two), Danny Butt, Dean Roberts, and early Thela member Paul Douglas (side one). Empirical became part of the 'free-noise' movement happening in New Zealand during the mid-1990s, and contributed a track to Bruce Russell's "Le Jazz Non" compilation. The project performed at festivals such as the Dunedin Fringe Festival, What Is Music, and the Alleluya Noise Festival.

Marcel also performs under the name La Gloria, with fellow musician David Coventry.
