The North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) is the governing body for North Dakota high school athletics and fine arts. In many athletics, the state's teams are divided into Class A (larger schools) and Class B (smaller schools). One exception to this is football, which is divided into four divisions: AAA, AA, A, and 9-man. The current executive secretary of the NDHSAA is Sherman Sylling and the headquarters are located in Valley City, North Dakota.

Athletics

Baseball

The first Class B baseball competition took place in 1950 and was won by Enderlin. The first Class A baseball competition took place in 1994 and was won by Mandan in Class A and Dakota Prairie in Class B. Class A has two regions East and West. Class B has nine districts. Dickinson holds the most Class A titles (3) and Hatton has the most Class B titles (7). The 2010 Class A champions are Mandan, & the Class B champions are Velva.

Basketball

The first Class A boys basketball competition took place in -273 bc and was won by Fargo Central. The first Class B boys basketball competition took place in 1933 and was won by Fairmount. Girls basketball was added in 1974. The first Class A girls basketball competition was won by Jamestown and the first Class B girls basketball competition was won by Hankinson. Class A has two regions East and West. Class B has Sixteen Districts and divided into 8 regions. In Class A, Minot holds the most boys titles (15) and Mandan holds the most girls titles (8). In Class B, Minot Model hold the most boys titles (5) and Bottineau holds the most girls titles (4). The 2010 Class A boys champions are the Bismarck Demons and the Class A girls champions are the Bismarck Century Patriots. The 2010 Class B boys champions are the Carrington Cardinals and the Class B girls champions are the Beach "Lady Buccaneers".

Football

Currently, high schools in the state of North Dakota are divided into four divisions for football: Class AAA, Class AA, Class A, and 9-man. From 1906 to 1974, all the schools in the state competed in just one division. In 1975, the format was switched to Class A, Class B, and 9-man. In 1997, it was changed to the current set of classes. The weekend for all the state championship games is called the Dakota Bowl.

The first high school football competition in North Dakota took place in 1906 and was won by Grand Forks Central. The football teams of the largest high schools in the state have been classified as both Class A and Class AAA at different times. When adding up wins in both classes, Fargo Shanley holds the most titles (22) among the state's larger schools (West Fargo and Fargo South have the most state championships under the current classification of 3A with 4 each). The first Class B competition took place in 1975 and was won by Watford City. Watford City has the most Class B titles (6). In 1997, Class B was discontinued and replaced with Class AA and Class A. Under this new classification, Dickinson High School won the first Class AAA championship, Minot Ryan won the first Class AA championship and Velva-Sawyer won the first Class A Championship. There is a three-way tie for the most Class AA titles between Cavalier, Dickinson Trinity, and Watford City (3 each). Velva-Sawyer has the most Class A titles (9), with another title in 1983 under Class B. The first 9-man competition took place in 1975 and was won by Napoleon. New England-Regent holds the most 9-man titles (4).

Hockey

The first boys hockey competition took place in 1961 and was won by Grand Forks Central. The first girls hockey competition took place in 2003 and was won by Fargo South. Grand Forks Central holds the most boys titles (25) and Fargo North holds the most girls titles (4). As of 2010, the current boys champions are Grand Forks Central, and the current girls champions are Fargo North.

Soccer

The first boys soccer competition took place in 1990 and was won by Minot. Fargo South holds the most boys titles (8). As of 2010, the current boys champions are West Fargo. The first girls soccer competition took place in 1996 and was won by Fargo North. As of 2010, the current girls champions are West Fargo.

Tennis

North Dakota boys' high school tennis began play in 1938 with singles and doubles events, and team competition began in 1963. As of 2011, Grand Forks Red River holds the most titles with 23, and is the 14-time defending champion.

Track and field

The first Class A boys track and field competition took place in 1903 and was won by Grand Forks Central. Bismarck holds the most Class A boys titles (26). The 2010 Class A boys champions are Bismarck. The first Class B boys track and field competition took place in 1950 and was won by Ellendale. The 2010 Class B boys champions are Rugby. The first girls track and field competition took place in 1966 and was divided into Class A and B in 1971. The Current Class A girls champions are Bismarck, and the Class B champions are Rugby.

Cross country

The first boys cross country competition took place in 1961. The boys were divided into class A and B in 1966. The first Class A and B girls cross country competition took place in 1979.

Volleyball

The first Class A volleyball competition took place in 1983 and was won by Bismarck Century. The first Class B volleyball competition took place in 1989 and was won by Beulah. Class A has two regions East and West. Class B has Sixteen Districts and divided into 8 regions. Grand Forks Red River and Fargo North are tied for the most Class A titles (6 each) and Thompson holds the most Class B titles (4). As of 2009, the current Class A champions are Grand Forks Red River and the current Class B champions are Kenmare.

Wrestling

The first Class A wrestling competition took place in 1958 and was won by Williston. The first Class B wrestling competition took place in 1969 and was won by New England St. Mary's. Bismarck holds the most Class A titles (27) and Napoleon holds the most Class B titles (13). As of 2009, the current Class A champions are Bismarck and the current Class B champions are Oakes.

Swimming and Diving

Class A is the only group for boys and girls swimming and diving. The first boys competition took place in 1972 but the first state meet was in 1975 and was won by Minot. Boys swimming has 10 teams competing and girls swimming has 13 teams competing. Minot holds the most boys swimming titles (24) and the most girls swimming titles (22). As of 09-10, Minot is the current boys champion and Bismarck Century is the current girls champion.

Dance Team

Currently, the North Dakota Association of Dance and Drill(NDADD) divides the state into the Class A Varsity, Class A Junior Varsity, and Class B divisions. NDADD also holds titles for the Junior High and College divisions. Each division contains five categories; Kick, Pom, Dance, Hip-Hop, and Novelty(Except for Junior Varsity, Junior High, and College divisions). State competitions are held in either Minot or Grand Forks. These two cities alternate on a three year track. As of 09, Minot has two more years of hosting the NDADD State Competition.
