Dzerzhinsky ( _ru. Дзержи́нский) is a town in
Moscow Oblast ,Russia , on a bank of theMoskva River , fifteen kilometers south from the city ofLyubertsy . The western part of Dzerzhinsky is connected withMoscow . Population: 41,488 (2002 Census).Lyubertsy–Dzerzhinsky
railway is used for cargo transportation only; passenger line was dismounted due to inefficiency.Town's industry comprises Heat and Power Central #22 ( _ru. ТЭЦ-22, CHP-22), reinforced concrete constructions factory, chemical industry.
Five secondary schools and one professional school operate in the town, as well as a musical school and a school of arts. Dzerzhinsky has a local newspaper "Ugreshskiye Vesti" ( _ru. «Угре́шские вести», "Ugresh news").
Town history closely interconnects with the history of
Nikolo-Ugresh monastery , located in the town center. The monastery was founded ca. 1380 by the order of theKnyaz Dmitri Donskoi and was named afterSaint Nicholas , who, as thelegend says, Knyaz saw in the dream, in time of preparing for the long campaign againstMamai horde. In an effort to fight childrenhomelessness , monastery was reorganised into achildren labour colony in 1920; it was later transformed into alabour commune by Felix Dzerzhinsky.In 1921, the colony spread outside the former monastery and an official settlement was established. In 1938, it received the
urban-type settlement status, right after the commune dissolved. Town status was granted to Dzerzhinsky in 1981.On
March 31 ,2006 ,Viktor Dorkin , the head of the Local Government Board, was shot dead ref|note1. Investigation constated that he was assassinated because of his professional career. One killer was detained beforeMay 5 ,2006 ref|note2.On
June 26 ,2006 the special elections took place in the city of Dzerzhinsky, won byAlexey Pleshakov .Sister cities
