Gurye County ("Gurye-gun") is a county in South Jeolla Province, South Korea.

Location

Gurye is situated in the southwestern part of Korea, but it is not easily accessible because of its landlocked and mountainous terrain.

Bus

From Seoul, there are 6 trips daily and it takes 3.5 hours. Gurye is three hours away from Busan and about one hour from Gwangju.

Train

There is no station in Gurye.

Car

Gwangju is the nearest city and it takes one hour to get there by car.

Festival

Gurye is famous for "sansuyu". Sansuyu is the fruit of the Japanese Cornel (cornus officinalis) tree which has yellow flowers in early spring. The festival is held every mid-March.

In 2007, more than 500,000 tourists visited during the four day festival. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of South Korea chose Gurye's festival as an excellent culture-tour event for the first time. ["구례산수유꽃축제, 문화관광축제로 선정" Dailian News (kor) 2007-12-27]

Products

Sansuyu is a well-known medicinal item from early Korean history. Dongui Bogam said it has several effects such as protecting liver and skin. ["'조상이 물려 준 선물'.. 의성 '산수유' 군락지" Newsis 2007.11.28]
