Beryllium hydroxide is one of the few amphoteric metal hydroxides, capable of being an acid or a base under different conditions. [http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/tp4-c4.pdf] For example, it dissolves in sodium hydroxide solution to give a colourless solution of sodium beryllate:

2NaOH(aq) + Be(OH)2(s) → Na2Be(OH)4(aq)

With acids, beryllium hydroxide acts as a typical base, and beryllium salts are formed.
