Peel, Isle of Man

Peel, Isle of Man

– Port of the Island) is often called the only 'city' in the Isle of Man because it is the home of the Island's cathedral; legally it is the fourth largest town on the island after Douglas, Onchan and Ramsey. Its population is 3,785 according to the 2001 census.

Peel is also a House of Keys constituency, electing one MHK, who, since 2006, has been Tim Crookall.

Peel was never capital of the Island, but Peel Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Sodor and Man. It is the Island's main fishing port.

Peel is often referred to as the "rose red city" or "sunset city" due to the red sandstone used to build the castle and other important buildings. It also faces west and enjoys beautiful sunsets over the Irish Sea. Peel is a popular seaside destination for Manx citizens and visitors in summer and is noted for its narrow streets of fishermen's cottages and a sizeable promenade and sandy beach. the Victorian promenade was built on reclaimed land and a small construction line built for this purpose.

Usually, at least one seal can be seen in the harbour or just outside it.

The House of Manannan museum, the second largest on the island and the Manx Transport Museum are located on the harbour. Additionally, Peel Castle is situated on a small island, St Patrick's Isle, connected to the town by causeway. In 2005, a new floodgate was installed at Peel to retain the waters of the River Neb and thus afford the moored boats the ability to float at low tide.

Peel is home to Queen Elizabeth II High School, and Clothworkers' primary school. It is also the birthplace of the Peel microcars made by the Peel Engineering the only Manx cars ever built.
