Omer Nishani

Dr. Omer Nishani (1887-1954) was an Albanian politician from Gjirokastër.

He helped organize the Albanian National Revolutionary Committee in Vienna in 1925.^[1]

In a surprise move, he published a declaration in the Tomori newspaper in Tirana on April 12th, 1941, exhorting his fellow Albanians to "submit with discipline to our faith in Albanian Fascism" which was the "only hope of achieving the enlargement of Albania".^[2] He finished his piece with statements of support for both the Italian king and Benito Mussolini.^[2]

Nishani later joined the Albanian Liberation Front (LNC), dominated by the Communists, and the communist party. In May 1944 Omer Nishani became Chairman of the Presidium for the antifascist Council for the National Liberation (and with that the de facto president) and Minister for Foreign Affairs. After the formation of the Republic of Albania on January 12, 1946, Nishani was Chairman of the Presidium until 1953. He represented Albania during a consultation of the Allied powers in Paris (1947).
