November 12 ,1850 –September 12 ,1928 ) was an American educator and historian, born atRichmond, Ohio .He graduated from
Columbia College of Columbia University in 1868, and afterwards was employed at Pittsburgh until 1872. While employed inGermany as private secretary toGeorge Bancroft , United States Minister atBerlin , he studied history under Mommsen and Droysen.He was professor of history in the College of New Jersey (Princeton) from 1883 to 1896. While there, he edited the "Princeton Review" (1886-89). He resigned in 1896 to become professor of history at Columbia.
Professor Sloane was a member of the
American Academy of Arts and Letters , and in 1911 president or theAmerican Historical Association . His other honors wereChevalier of theFrench Legion of Honor and of theSwedish North Star .He published:
