Firearms manufacturing in Hartford, CT

U. S. Fire Arms Mfg. Co. is the only gun company still manufacturing in the City of Hartford, CT. The Colt Company sold the original plant in 1955 to a limited partnership which struggled to maintain the brick structure and site that covered six city blocks in Hartford's South End, adjacent to the Connecticut River. In 1993 Colt abandoned its space at the old plant, however, USFA continued to produce arms there. On Colt's departure, USFA became the only gun maker manufacturingColt shows its headquarters as Hartford, CT, however, the company web site shows that U.S. [http://www.coltsmfg.com/cmci/contact.asp manufacturing] of Colt products is performed in West Hartford, CT.] in Hartford since Sam Colt [ [http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/theymadeamerica/whomade/colt_hi.html "Who Made America?" Many other famous guns or related devices were also built in the original factory or its Hartford environs. Examples include Hiram Percy Maxim's firearm noise suppressor "the Maxim Silencer," John Browning's semi-automatic and automatic pistols, and M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle, and Christian Sharps', later C. Sharps, long range Sharps rifle.

Economies of computer-driven machining could only be realized if the machinery could fit through the door, but the historic brick armory was not accommodating in this regard. USFA purchased a new site in late 2001 (its current convert|4|acre|m2|sing=on campus) to expand operations in Hartford, and until 2003 maintained both the historic Armory and the new facility for the production of Lightning magazine rifles, new Model 1910 automatics, and its historically accurate Single Action Army [Hamilton, Alex. Modernizing production

As U.S. Fire Arms Mfg. Co.moved to its current Hartford manufacturing campus, the last revolvers made "Under the Blue Dome" in 2003 were a series of special runs of the Single Action Army model. They were built in mixed finishes including "Old Armory Color Case" ["Old Armory Color Case" is a company trademark.] and "Dome Blue", ["Dome Blue" is a company trademark.] with 7½ inch, 5½ inch or 4¾ inch barrels, chambered in .45 Colt bearing special serial numbers and several different grip styles. The first in the series remains in USFA's archive today. As well as .45 Colt, other calibers of U.S. Fire Arms Mfg. Co. handguns available today include .44 Special, .38 WCF, .44-40 Winchester, [Venturino, Mike. In addition to Single Action Army models, U.S. Fire Arms Mfg. Co. manufactures semiautomatic M1911, 1910, Super .38 Automatic, and Ace .22 LR pistols, the Lightning rifle and a take-down version, The Magic Rifle. The U.S. Fire Arms Mfg. Co. Custom Shop division made the gun given to NRA President Charlton Heston in thanks for his decade of service as NRA President.

Remington & Sons brand, starting with the 1858 and 1875 Models. ["see" [http://www.usfirearms.com/pdf/Press_Release_Remington_USFA.pdf USFA press release] dated 13 April 2007 on E. Study of gun manufacturing in the United States today is informed by two recent legal and legislative actions. On the legal front, specifically addressing the individual's right to bear arms, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned an outright ban on firearms in a 26 June 2008 case, District of Columbia v. Heller. [In this 5-4 decision, the minority contended that the right to bear arms lay within the context of service in a militia, whereas the majority held that this was an individual right. For more on this, see the D.C. v. Heller article.] This decision clarified the individual's civil rights under the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights for the first time in United States history, ["see" Cato Institute [http://www.cato.org/pubs/legalbriefs/dc_v_heller.pdf amicus brief] filed in support of the individual's right to bear arms.
