Robert Gotobed

Robert Gotobed

Robert Gotobed (born Robert Grey, 21 April 1951 in Marefield, Leicester) is an English musician.

Career

He has been Wire's regular drummer since 1977. His subtle, fluid, yet powerful drumming set him apart from the typical loud, flashy punk drummers, and helped to not only set Wire apart from their contemporaries, but define the "post-punk" genre.

Toward the end of Wire's career, they incorporated drum machines into their sound, to the point that, in 1990, Gotobed famously fired himself after realizing that bringing both a drum machine and drum kit on tour would be too expensive. As a result, the band dropped the "e" from its name and became "Wir". He took back his given name and rejoined the band the following year.
