The Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives is the presiding officer of the Texas House. The Speaker's main duties are to conduct meetings of the House, appoint committees, and enforce the Rules of the House. The current speaker is Tom Craddick, a Republican from Midland, who was first elected Speaker on January 11, 2003.
Election
The speaker is elected from the body of the House, by a vote of its fellow members.[Specified by [http://tlo2.tlc.state.tx.us/statutes/docs/GV/content/htm/gv.003.00.000302.00.htm#302.001.00 §302.001] of the Texas government code.] On the first day of each regular session, the members may nominate a fellow member, and a record vote is held to determine who the speaker will be.
