Progressive Liberal Party

The Progressive Liberal Party is a populist, liberal party in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

In The Bahamas National Assembly, the PLP has 17 out of 41 seats. Perry Christie is the leader of the party and leader of the Opposition. Mr. Christie was Prime Minister of The Bahamas between May 2, 2002 and May 2, 2007 when he was defeated by the rival Free National Movement, which won 23 seats. FNM leader, Hubert Ingraham is now the Prime Minister.

The PLP was founded in 1953, twenty years before independence. The party governed for a total of 30 years, from 1967 to 1992 and again from 2002 to 2007. Leading the party to its first victory in 1967 was Lynden Oscar Pindling, the country's first Prime Minister. Last month Kenyetta Gibson left the PLP due to party differences and is an independent leaving the party with just 17 seats in the house. the party is also going through in-house turmoil after a discouraging defeat at the polls.
