John Heddens Kingston (born April 24, 1955), Republican politician, has been a member of the United States House of Representatives since 1993, representing ushr|Georgia|1| ( [http://nationalatlas.gov/printable/images/preview/congdist/ga01_110.gifmap] ).

Early life and background

Kingston was born April 24, 1955 in Bryan, Texas, but spent most of his life in Athens, Georgia. He earned a degree in economics from the University of Georgia, where he also joined Lambda Chi Alpha. He has lived in Savannah since 1977 and spent over a decade selling insurance and working in agribusiness throughout southeastern Georgia before entering politics. He was elected to the Georgia General Assembly in 1984. He succeeded to Democratic incumbent Bobby Phillips and became the State Representative from the 153rd district. He was re-elected in 1986, 1988 and 1990. [Charles S. Bullock, III, The Georgia Political Almanac, The General Assembly 1993-94]

United States Representative

In 1992, Kingston declined running for re-election as a state representative to pursue a congressional run in Georgia's increasingly Republican 1st congressional district. He won his first election decisively with 58 percent of the vote and succeeded Democratic incumbent Robert Lindsay Thomas who had chosen not to run. He has not been seriously challenged since, never dropping below 69 percent of the vote. He even ran unopposed in 1998 and 2004.

Positions

Kingston is a consistent fiscal and social conservative, opposing abortion and supporting tax cuts. He also has a reputation as a strong speaker and is a frequent guest on cable news.
