"The Werewolf of Fever Swamp" is the 14th book in R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series.

Plot

Grady Tucker and his family his sister Emily, his dad Michael, and Grady's mom move into a creepy house next to Fever Swamp. He befriends another boy, Will Blake, and the two of them often explore Fever Swamp together. However, strange howls are heard at night and dead animals turn up in the morning after. Grady finds and convinces his parents to let him keep a large wolf-like stray dog for a pet which he names Wolf. But when something has broken into the deer pen in Grady's yard and killed one of the animals, Michael decides that the stray had to be taken to the pound. Grady helps the dog flee before Michael can capture it. That night, Grady hears the howling again and explores Fever Swamp to get to the bottom of things. He encounters Will, who is slowly turning into a wolf under the full moon. The newly changed werewolf bites Grady, but the assault is cut short when Wolf attacks and kills Will. Michael relents and allows his son to keep Wolf upon hearing that the dog rescued Grady. On the night of the next full moon, Grady transforms into a wolf and joins Wolf in exploring the swamp together.

Book's description

There's something horrible happening in Fever Swamp. Something really horrible. It started with the strange howling at night. Then there was the rabbit, torn to shreds. Everyone thinks Grady's new dog is responsible. After all, he looks just like a wolf. And he seems a little on the wild side. But Grady knows his dog is just a regular old dog. And most dogs don't howl at the moon. Or disappear at midnight. Or change into terrifying creatures when the moon is full. Or do they?

TV Adaptation

This episode starred a young Brendan Fletcher as Grady Tucker. The TV version of "The Werewolf of Fever Swamp" features a slightly different ending and a new subplot, which involves a reclusive "Swamp Hermit," who functions as a red herring. The ending also differs, whereas Grady is not seen as a werewolf but instead howls at the moon in the end. Grady's dog Wolf is also renamed Vandal. Cassie O' Rourke, a minor character in the book does not appear. Also, in the book, Will does not believe in werewolves, Cassie does.

As with other prime-time "Goosebumps" airings, R.L. Stine makes an appearance to introduce the story. He reminds the audience that in reality, there's no such thing as werewolves. Then, at the end of the show, he waves his right arm, made up through prosthetics to resemble the werewolf's.

Trivia

In one scene on the TV episode, when Grady is sleeping, the camera skims over Grady's skateboard, which has a picture of Carly Beth Caldwell wearing the mask from the Haunted Mask (another Goosebumps episode).
