"Pedro Páramo" is a short novel written by Juan Rulfo, originally published in 1955. In just the 23 FCE editions and reprintings, it had sold by November 1997 1,143,000 copies. Other editions in Mexico, Spain, and other nations have sold countless more copies. It is Rulfo's second book, after the short story collection "The Burning Plain" (original Spanish title, "El llano en llamas").

The story begins as Juan Preciado travels to Comala, Colima, the town his mother left after marrying Pedro Páramo who then stole all her lands and inheritance. Comala is deserted, home only to the ghosts of its former inhabitants. Through his interactions with the ghosts of the town, Juan Preciado reveals the history of Comala's demise.

"Pedro Páramo" had a major influence in the development of magical realism and it is told in a mixture of first and third person.

The novel has been twice translated into English. The more recent (and often considered the more accurate and complete)Fact|date=December 2007 translation is by Margaret Sayers Peden.

"Pedro Páramo" has been filmed more than once. The latest, and most prominent, adaptation will star Gael García Bernal and will be directed by Mateo Gil. [ [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0999906/ Pedro Páramo (2009) ] ]
