William Michael Cocke

William Michael Cocke

William Michael Cocke (b. July 16, 1815 in Rudledge, Tennessee — d. February 6, 1896 in Nashville, Tennessee) was an American politician who represented Tennessee's second district in the United States House of Representatives.

He was born in Rutledge, Tennessee on July 16, 1815. He pursued classical studies and graduated from East Tennessee College at Knoxville, Tennessee. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practiced in Rutledge and Nashville. He served as a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives.

He was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-ninth and Thirtieth Congresses. He served from March 4, 1845 to March 3, 1849. During the Thirtieth Congress, he was chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Revolutionary Pensions. He was not a candidate for re-election in 1848. He held many local and state offices afterward, before dying in Nashville on February 6, 1896. He was interred in Mount Olivet Cemetery. He was the grandson of William Cocke and the nephew of John Alexander Cocke.
