Lake Tengiz ( _kz. Теңіз көлі, _ru. Тенгиз) is a saline lake in north-central part of Kazakhstan. It is located at around coord|50|26|23|N|68|54|0|E. It has an area of 1,382 km², average depth of 2.5 m and maximum depth of 6.7 m. Lake Tengiz is an important wetland site for birds. It is designated a Ramsar wetland site of international importance. 295 species of birds have been recorded at Lake Tengiz, 22 of which are endangered. On October 16, 1976, Soyuz 23 unintentionally splashed down into the lake.
