Sundergarh, also known as Sundargarh, is a city in Orissa state of eastern India. It is the headquarters of Sundergarh District.

Geography

Sundargarh is located at coord|22.12|N|84.03|E|. [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/21/Sundargarh.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Sundargarh] ] It has an average elevation of 243 metres (801 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Sundargarh had a population of 40,943. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Sundargarh has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 69%. In Sundargarh, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Kisan tribe

Kisan Tribe are the major inhabitants on this district along with Oram, Gond etc. The are Farmers and Food gatherers by profession. They are famous for their Singing and Dancing along with their hospitality.

Languages

The main language that is spoken in Sundargarh is Oriya language,beside that many tribals language are also there. Santhali and Sadri are the native language of the tribals residing here.Santhali is written in Al Chiki script and has also been recognized as an official language by The Government Of India. Every year an All India test is held in Santhali language which is equivalent to the 10th class exam.

Politics

Current MLA from Sundargarh Assembly Constituency is Smt.Sushama Patel of BJP, who won the seat in bye-elections in 2006 due to death of seating MLA Sankarsan Naik who won the seat in 2004 General Election. Previous MLAs from this seat were Kishore Chandra Patel who won this seat representing INC in 1995 and in 1977, and also representing INC(I) in 1980, and Bharatendra Shekhar Deo who won this seat representing JD in 1990 and representing JNP in 1985.
