He was appointed coach of theCzech Republic national under-21 football team in 1997 and head of the national team in 2001. He achieved success with the team, reaching the semi-finals of theEURO 2004 . The team went to qualify for theFIFA World Cup 2006 and theEURO 2008 but failed to progress beyond the group stage in either of the competitions.
