Paul Daisley

Paul Daisley

Paul Andrew Daisley (20 July 1957, Acton – 18 June 2003) was an English politician. When he died he was Labour Member of Parliament (MP) for Brent East.

Early life

He spent many days at his grandparents in Hallaton in Leicestershire. He went to Littlemore School (now the Oxford Academy) in Littlemore, south Oxford then Abingdon College in Abingdon. He was an Accounting Officer for Texaco from 1976-84. He was Director of Finance and Administration for a private company, Daisley Associates a company he ran with his father, from 1984-96.

Parliamentary career

Daisley was leader of Brent Council from 1996 until his selection to stand for Parliament in 2001. He succeeded Ken Livingstone as Labour's candidate for the seat, after Livingstone was expelled for the party and decided to step down at the 2001 election in order to concentrate on his duties as Mayor of London. His campaign had Livingstone's backing. His maiden speech in February 2002 was postponed for seven months due to treatment for his cancer spread and at the time of his election he was still seriously ill and only weighed seven stone.

Personal life

He died from colorectal cancer aged 45. In February 2001, he had been in a coma for six weeks. At the subsequent by-election, the safe Labour seat was lost to Liberal Democrat Sarah Teather. He married Lesley Jordan in 1984.
