Fabrizio Maramaldo

Fabrizio Maramaldo

Fabrizio Maramaldo (1494 – December 1552) was an Italian condottiero.

An illitterate native of Naples or Calabria, he gained a fame as a ruthless mercenary and ravager. Among the others, he served the Gonzaga of Mantua and the Republic of Venice. In 1527 he took part in the Sack of Rome and, two years later, the siege of Florence, always on the Imperial side.

On August 3, 1530, he killed the famous captain Francesco Ferrucci at Gavinana.

In the Italian language, the substantive "maramaldo" and the adjective "maramaldesco" ("Maramaldesque") has become eponymous of "ruthless", "villainous".
