People's Party – Movement for a Democratic Slovakia

The People's Party – Movement for a Democratic Slovakia ( _sk. Ľudová strana – Hnutie za demokratické Slovensko) is a political party in Slovakia. Its leader is Vladimír Mečiar.

The party was part of the Slovak government:
*as the leading coalition party (Mečiar governments): from 1992 to the spring 1994 and again from autumn 1994 to 1998
*as the smallest coalition partner (Fico government): since July 2006

Opposition party (1998 - 2006)

It was the largest single party during the second Dzurinda legislature, with 36 of 150 seats (2002 election), but after clashes in the party it divided and in 2006 it had only 21 MPs. The party was called just "Movement for a Democratic Slovakia" in the 1990s. See Vladimír Mečiar for further details.

Participation in Fico government (since July 2006)

In the parliamentary election of 17 June 2006, the party won 8.8 % of the popular vote and 15 out of 150 seats. Currently, the party has 16 seats.

Two ĽS-HZDS ministers were sworn in with the Robert Fico government on July 4, 2006.
