Detroit-Windsor Truck Ferry

Detroit-Windsor Truck Ferry

The Detroit-Windsor Truck Ferry is a ferry service that has been shuttling cars and trucks across the Detroit River for over 100 years.

The ferry currently accepts only trucks (lorries). Similar to all the international crossings in the Detroit-Windsor area, a toll is required, as is clearance from Canada Border Services Agency and the United States Customs Service at both terminals of the ferry route.

Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, the Detroit-Windsor Truck Ferry has taken up the role as the crossing for hazardous materials/hazmat trucks between Windsor, La Salle, and Detroit, Michigan and the Downriver Communities, since hazardous materials have been banned from the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, and the nearest crossing that allows hazardous/radioactive materials across is the Bluewater Bridge in Sarnia, Ontario.

Location

On the Windsor side of the river, the Truck Ferry entrance is on Sprucewood Road (Essex County Road 40), near the Windsor Salt Mine, and can be accessed from Ojibway Parkway (formerly Highway 18, now Essex County Road 20).

On the Detroit side of the river, the Truck Ferry entrance is on the south side of Jefferson Avenue West between S Schroeder St and S Post St, near Zug Island. Customs Offices are at the entrances, and one must make a clearance with Customs before embarking onto the Truck Ferry, for standard procedures.
