Electoral district of Port Adelaide

Port Adelaide is an electoral district of the House of Assembly in the Australian state of South Australia. Named after Port Adelaide because of its geographical location, it is a 113.4 km² urban electorate on Adelaide's Lefevre Peninsula and stretches east to cove some of Adelaide's northern suburbs. It contains a mix of seaside residential areas, wasteland and industrial regions. It includes the suburbs of Cavan,
Dry Creek, Gillman, Greenfields, Largs North, Mawson Lakes, North Haven, Osborne, Ottoway, Outer Harbor, Taperoo, Wingfield as well as parts of Bolivar, Gepps Cross,
Globe Derby Park, Largs Bay, Parafield Gardens, Peterhead, Pooraka, Rosewater and St Kilda.

Port Adelaide has had three incarnations as a South Australian electoral district. It was first used as district in the Legislative Council, from 1851 until 1856. From 1856 onwards, it became one of 17 House of Assembly districts, with multi-member representation. In 1938, it became a single member district, until its abolition in 1969. From then until the 2002 state election, the area was served by the electoral district of Semaphore and the electoral district of Hart respectively.

Since it became a single member district in 1938, the seat has continually been held by the Australian Labor Party (ALP), usually with a large margin. The current member Kevin Foley, is the Treasurer of South Australia, having previously held Hart since 1993. At the 2006 state election, Foley increased his margin from 21.7% to an even safer 25.7%. Aside from the booth at Mawson Lakes which had the ALP at 55.2%, Labor gained an outright majority in all other booths.
