Electoral district of MacKillop

Electoral district of MacKillop

MacKillop is an electoral district of the House of Assembly in the Australian state of South Australia. Named after Mary MacKillop, the only Australian Roman Catholic nun to be beatified, who served the local area, it is a 24,358.3 km² rural electorate in the south-east of the state, stretching from the mouth of the Murray River southwards, but excluding the far-southern point of the state, which includes Mount Gambier. It contains the District Council of Kingston, District Council of Naracoorte Lucindale, District Council of Robe, District Council of Tatiara, as well as parts of District Council of The Coorong, and District Council of Wattle Range. The main population centres are Bordertown, Naracoorte, Penola, Keith, Millicent and Tintinara.

The district was first created in 1991 for the 1993 state election, replacing the Electoral district of Victoria, where it was won easily for the Liberals by Dale Baker, who was a former parliamentary state leader of the Liberal party and state minister, however at the 1997 state election, it was captured by an Independent Liberal, Mitch Williams, who returned to the Liberal party before the 2002 state election. At the 2006 state election, he increased his margin from 20.3% to 22.2%, one of the few districts in which the Liberal party improved their position.
