Principal dancer

Principal dancer

A principal dancer is similar to a soloist in dance. However, principals are hired by (or promoted from within) a ballet or dance company to perform not only solos, but also pas de deux. A principal may be male or female. It is a coveted position in the company and the most prominent position a dancer can receive. It is normally used in ballet dancing, but can be used in other forms as well, such as modern dance.
