He has served in different capacities as a teacher and administrator in New York public schools over the course of his professional career.

Vann served as a member of the New York State Assembly-representing the 56th District-from 1975-2001.

After leaving the Assembly, Vann made a successful bid for the 36th seat on the New York City Council, which he has represented since 2001.

He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African Americans.

Response To Sean Bell Shooting

In response to the death of Sean Bell - apparently from the guns of NYPD officers - Albert Vann alleged that his shooting was caused by "institutional racism." [http://www.nypost.com/seven/11302006/news/regionalnews/city_pols_vent_their_race_rage_regionalnews_frankie_edozien.htm] He then proceeded to mock the suggestion that African-American New Yorkers living in high-crime neighborhoods should adapt certain behaviors in order to avoid confrontations with police officers.
