"The Codex" is a 2004 novel by Douglas Preston and takes place in the Southwestern United States and Central America.

The main story is about Max Broadbent, who is an eccentric rich man with terminal cancer, who likes to collect valuable art and treasures. One day, after writing a letter to 3 of his sons, telling them to go to his house, he packs up his valuables and vanishes, leaving his three sons a cryptic message as to his location. The son that finds his tomb will receive all his treasures. They each go their separate ways after figuring that their father is somewhere in Central America. A greedy head of a failing drug company, a ruthless private investigator (who was once friends with their father), a greedy leader of a cult, and a beautiful ethnopharmacologist are brought into the fray.

"The Codex" marks the first appearance of Wyman Ford, who will be seen in most Douglas Preston novels going forward.
