The University of New England is an independent, coeducational university with two distinctive campuses in two Maine coastal cities. The University Campus is located in Biddeford. The Westbrook College Campus is located in the Deering section of Portland and is designated a national historic district.

The University has degree programs in health sciences, natural sciences, human services, management, education and the liberal arts. The University includes Maine's only medical school, the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, which emphasizes the education of primary care physicians. Enrollments for the two campuses total 2,364, including 496 medical students. UNE also has several distance learning programs. The online Master of Science Degree has an unusual degree of curricular coherence along with strong student support. UNE also has a satellite nursing program in Israel.

University campus

The University campus is composed of more than 540 acres (2.2 km²), including more than 4,000 feet (1.2 km) of ocean frontage. The 26 buildings of the University campus include the Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences, a state-of-the-art 80,000 square foot (7,000 m²) science education facility, and the Marine Science Education and Research Center, which houses the Marine Animal Rehabilitation Clinic. The Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences houses Maine's only medical school, University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM). [http://www.une.edu/com/]

A public transit service called the Nor'easter Express provides transportation from the University campus to downtown Biddeford and Saco, as well as the Saco train station and the park & ride lot near the Biddeford turnpike exit. [http://www.shuttlebus-zoom.com/UNE030508.pdf]
