= The Event =

The 1998 Embassy World Snooker Championship took place at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield between the 18th April to the 4th May 1998. The total prize money was £1,148,000 with £230,000 going to the winner.

Notable Moments

Notable moments from the championship include:

* Stephen Hendry lost in Round 1 in this year. It was the first time since his debut in 1986 that he lost in the last 32 and it was also the first quarter-final stage not to feature Hendry since 1988.

* David Gray, Quinten Hann and Matthew Stevens all made their Crucible debuts this year. Hann also became the first Australian since Eddie Charlton since 1992.

* Stephen Hendry's eight year run as World No. 1 ended after Hendry lost in the first round to Jimmy White. John Higgins was already assured of the No. 1 spot before defeating reigning champion Ken Doherty in the final. Had he lost this match, he would have been the first World No. 1 not to have previously won the world championship.
