The governorates of Libya ("muhafazah") existed from the 1960s until the 1980s.

They were: Al Jabal al Akhdar, Al Khums, Awbari, Az Zawiyah, Benghazi, Darnah, Al Jabal al Gharbi, Misratah, Sabhah, Tarabulus. [http://statoids.com/uly.html]
