Elam School of Fine Arts

The Elam School of Fine Arts, founded in 1890 by John Edward Elam is a part of Auckland University. Students study degrees in fine art with an emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach.

History

The school was founded in 1890 by John Edward Elam. Archie Fisher was appointed principal in 1924 and was instrumental in the school's inclusion within the University of Auckland in 1950.

A fire at the school in January of 1949 destroyed many works for an upcoming exhibition by John Weeks.cite book|title=We Learnt to See: Elam's Rutland Group 1935-1958|author=Ian Thwaites & Rie Fletcher|id=ISBN 0-908-943-27-X|year=2004|pages=pp. 43-45|publisher=Puriri Press]

In 1994 the Sargeson Trust gave the Fraser Gallery, located in the downstairs premises of an historic stables in Princes St, to the students of Elam for an exhibition space. [cite web
