Caroline Lufkin (stage name Caroline) is an Okinawa-born Okinawan-American musician and younger sister of J-pop artist Olivia Lufkin. Caroline's songs feature dozens of live acoustic instruments, including pianos, harps, bells, guitars, strings and hand drums, and use no samples. Caroline performed in Taiwan's Formoz Festival along with Nanase Aikawa on July 29, 2006. She was invited by her Taiwanese record distributor company, White Wabbit Records.

Biography

Originally from Okinawa, Japan, Caroline Lufkin moved around a lot by the time she had graduated from the Berklee School of Music in Boston in 2003. After graduating, Caroline moved to Tokyo and began working on an album. Before signing with her current label, she had been working on an album in the Japanese music industry where they were grooming her to be a Japanese pop singer. However, she eventually quit due to their difference in views on her music stating that "they kept on telling me to change things and I didn't want to change them... They were trying to make the music super-pop, and I couldn't quite deal with it." [http://www.theredalert.com/features/caroline.htm Caroline Interview: The Red Alert] Retrieved Apr 26, 2008]

Caroline would then begin her search for "cool indie labels". While at Tower Records in Japan one day, she saw a display for the label, Temporary Residence Limited, in the store and was amazed by the artists and artwork. She kept the label in mind while continuing her research. "Where's My Love?", Caroline's first song, was available to listen on her MySpace page in late 2004. Eventually she decided to send TRL an e-mail, asking if she could send in a demo, and signed it with her name and a link to her MySpace page. A few days later, after checking out Caroline's website, Jeremy deVine, founder and co-operator of the label, wanted to sign her to the label. "Where's My Love?" was officially released as a single on October 25, 2005 but was also distributed during the previous month. On March 6, 2006, Caroline released her debut album, Murmurs, and soon after held her first live show at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas on March 17 at the Whisky Bar.
